Crew Certification Program

World’s cruelest ultra-marathon

Crew Certification Program

La Ultra – The High is a one of a kind event in the world that presents a complex mix of adventure and learning. For 10 years athletes from around the world have been pushing their limits high in the Himalayas, also challenging physical, psychological and medical beliefs of so called ‘experts’.

The CREW members have formed the backbone of the race, holding together the many variables in the race that spans over long distances in one of the harshest environments on earth.

The Crew certification program aims at equipping the crew team with the necessary skills that will help you in not only in excelling in crew support, but also with necessary survival skills for outdoors, so you can take up an adventure at high altitudes or anywhere else with confidence.

What do you get to learn?

1. Wilderness and athlete emergency response – This session will introduce patient assessment, required first aid action for outdoor activities in wilderness. You will also learn in detail about asthma, heat stroke, hypothermia, cold injuries, musculo-skeletal injuries and how to improvise with existing resources available.

2. Outdoor survival skills – This session takes you on a day hike in Ladakh region and serves as a practical lesson on camping, pack-packing and outdoor living essentials in extreme environments. You also get to practice splinting, scenario decision making and understand resource specific evacuation methods.

3. High altitude related illnesses and response – In the 3rd session we go a bit in detail about what High altitude cerebral edema (HACE), High altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and acute mountain sickness (AMS) is. What are specific symptoms, how do you recognize them, and what should be your action plan for each condition.

4. In this session we also take you through how simple manual therapy can relieve muscle pain among runners and crew during La Ultra, and how can you use this to your team’s advantage. How muscle groups work, and which exercise and movement can keep you moving strong during your run / hike.

5. Scenario testing – Early morning on race day (Nubra Valley camp) the program ends with a surprise scenario that will put your newly acquired skills to the test. You will be presented with situation where a patient in distress needs your help and you need to act. This will be followed by a review and grading by the program instructors.
